Chapter Twenty-Three
Kittrin
Sasha looked so pale. Kitt tried not to worry, but it was hard. Sasha was a grekking Power That Be— neither he nor Ola should be as incapacitated as they were. It was wrong. He wanted to make them better, but he couldn’t. Grabbing Sasha’s hand, he held tight. “I’m still angry at you. You never listen!” He stared off into the distance, his temper not cooling at all. “I don’t know who is worse, you or Frode. Oh, no, don’t take that tone with me.”
“You do realize he isn’t talking, and it’s debatable if he can hear you.” One of the medics stood beside the pallet.
Kitt blushed. “I know, but I also know exactly what he would say. When he wakes up, I’ll be too happy to be angry. Therefore, I’m telling him off now. Who knows, maybe something I say will permeate that thick skull of his.” He turned back to Sasha, glaring at him.
The medic chuckled. “Good luck with that. From what I know of him, seeing him about recently, that is one stubborn man, Power, whatever.”
“Don’t I know it.” Kitt scowled again. Turning to the medic, his expression softened. “Thank you for looking after them both. Everyone really. While so many battle to save everything, you’ve all been fighting to save us.”
The medic looked around the tent at the injured lying on their pallets. “We all have our roles to play. I wish none of this were needed. But if there’s one thing I’m convinced of, the dragons deserve a home. They have been resolute in helping us, in saving those other dragons they could. How could we not repay their dedication? Besides, I saw who joined in the fight against us. It’s Calias and Dragonis alone. Both of us determined to do what is right. That counts for something. The honor I see here is something to be proud of. I’m glad to be a Calian.” With a last, quick check over Sasha, the medic moved off to the other side of the tent, monitoring everyone else who’d been injured.
Kitt turned back to Sasha. “You know, it’s really grekking hard to be mad at you.” He chuckled mirthlessly to himself. “You saved lives because of what you did, but you were a reckless idiot. I love you. Don’t you get that?! You need to stay around for me. I know you said you’re falling in love with me, so think on this… Imagine if I did what you did… would you be happy? Grek no. You would give me everything you’ve got. I’d expect you to, so you can’t expect anything else of me. I don’t know whether to hug you or throttle you!”
“I vote you throttle him.”
Kitt jumped a mile to hear Ola’s voice behind him.
“Ola!” He jumped up and ran to her pallet. Leaning down, he carefully hugged her, smiling when she returned the gesture.
“I see all these wounded. You’d better fill me in, and fast,” Ola demanded. Despite looking pale, she looked a lot better than the last time Kitt had seen her.
